Solid Wood & Craftsmanship Guidelines: Natural Characteristics vs. Defects
Solid wood is a living, breathing material. Every piece handcrafted for Soul & Tables possesses its own unique personality, grain structure, and warmth. Because no two trees grow alike, natural variations are an inherent badge of authenticity and craftsmanship—not a flaw.
To help set clear expectations, here is how we distinguish between natural wood characteristics and genuine manufacturing defects.
1. Natural Wood Characteristics (Not Considered Defects)
The following features are organic traits of authentic solid wood and do not qualify for returns, replacements, or free defect claims:
-
Grain Patterns & Mineral Streaks: Distinctive growth rings, straight or wavy grain flows, ray flecks (medullary rays in oak), and darker or lighter mineral deposits naturally drawn up by the tree during its growth.
-
Color Variations & Tonal Shifts: Organic variations in tone and warmth across adjacent wood planks, or between the heartwood (inner, darker wood) and sapwood (outer, lighter wood) of the tree.

-
Knots & Pinholes: Sound, stable knots, small cluster knots, bird pecks, and minor pinholes that are structurally solid. Where necessary for flat usage, these may be expertly filled with resin or wood filler at the workshop.
-
Micro-Checking & Seasonal Movement: Hairline checks (micro-cracks) running along the grain, minor seasonal expansion, or subtle shrinkage. Solid wood responds naturally to ambient indoor temperature and relative humidity changes.
-
Natural Patina & Maturation: Subtle gradual changes in color and sheen over time due to UV and air exposure (e.g., teak deepening in tone or oak gently mellowing).
-
Authentic Joinery & Expansion Gaps: Intentional expansion gaps designed into table undercarriages, floating panel grooves, or breadboard ends to allow the wood to breathe safely across seasons without buckling.
2. Manufacturing & Structural Defects (Eligible for Claim)
We stand by the structural integrity and high standards of our furniture. The following conditions represent manufacturing or transit issues and do qualify for complimentary repair, parts replacement, or exchange:
-
Severe Warping & Cupping: Significant structural warping or bowing (e.g., a tabletop lifting or cupping beyond accepted tolerances) that impairs functionality or destabilizes the piece on a flat surface.
-
Structural Splits & Deep Cracks: Cracks that run through the core thickness of a plank or compromise the structural stability, load-bearing capacity, or joinery of the item.
-
Loose or Failing Joinery: Joint separation, failing dowels, split mortise-and-tenons, or loose glue lines that destabilize frames, legs, or drawer structures.
-
Hardware & Mechanism Failures: Misaligned, jammed, or non-functioning soft-close hinges, drawer slides, extension table mechanisms, or stripped factory-drilled screw points upon initial setup.
-
Transit & Handling Damage: Deep gouges, dents, transit impact crushes, or splintering sustained prior to or during handover by our delivery team.
-
Inconsistent Factory Finishing: Blisters, peeling topcoats, severe untreated rough patches with loose splinters, or unintended pooling/runs in protective clear coats.
How to Submit a Claim
If you believe your piece has sustained a defect or delivery damage:
Contact us at [email protected] or +65 9272 1545 within 24 hours of delivery.
Provide your order number along with clear, wide-angle photos of the entire piece and close-up photos of the area in question.
Our technical team will review the photos to confirm whether the issue is a natural wood characteristic or a functional defect, and coordinate the appropriate workshop visit, touch-up, or replacement.
